The Buhoma sector is one of the four main sectors within the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in southwestern Uganda. It is known for its diverse wildlife and most notably for being home to a number of habituated mountain gorilla families.

Some of the well-known gorilla families in this sector include the Mubare, Habinyanja, and Rushegura. Each gorilla family consists of a dominant silverback (adult male), adult females, juveniles, and infants. The sector can also be accessed by scheduled flights from Entebbe International Airport to the nearby Kihihi Airstrip, followed by a short drive.
The history of the Buhoma sector dates back to the establishment of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in 1991. It was initially gazetted as a Forest Reserve in 1932 to protect the gorillas from poaching and habitat destruction. Later, it gained national park status to provide further protection and conservation efforts for the critically endangered mountain gorillas.

There are about 24 gorilla permits issued to travelers to Buhoma on a daily basis. Three gorilla families are visited by 8 trekking members each day. The permit costs USD 700 per person per trek. It sits at a higher elevation compared to the other sectors, offering stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. It is approximately a 9-hour drive from Uganda’s capital city, Kampala. Ruhija is known for its cooler and mistier climate due to its higher altitude. Ruhija is home to several habituated gorilla families that tourists can encounter during gorilla trekking. Some of the gorilla families in the Ruhija sector include Bitukura, Oruzogo, Kyaguliro, Mukiza, and Kyaguriro. Each gorilla family has its own unique dynamics and characteristics, making every trekking experience different and exciting.
Nkurungo Sector
Nkurungo Sector is situated in the southern region of Bwindi. The sector is well known for its views of Mount Nyiragongo and Mount Nyamuragira. Nkurungo is one of the hardest sectors to trek in because of the terrain but has one of the best views.
Nkurungo sector can easily be accessed from Kabale District which is 45km to Kisoro on a 3hr drive on the Kabale-Kisoro highway. Some of the activities carried out in this sector include nature walks, bird watching, and having to experience some of the cultures of the communities such as the Batwa and the Bakiga.
