Mount Bisoke Hike – Volcanoes National Park

Taking Mount Bisoke hike  is one of the popular climbing safaris in Rwanda as the mountain does not present an exceptionally demanding climb though still tough. Mount Bisoke is one of the 8 Volcanoes that form the Virunga massif or mountain range within the Albertine Rift. Mt Bisoke bestrides the Rwandan and Congo borders with the bigger part of the Bisoke volcano and its summit in Rwanda. Its summit has a crater lake of about 400m of diameter and other crater lake of Ngezi about 11km from the summit. Mt Bisoke has an altitude of 3,711m above sea level (covered with fog) with its features formed after its last eruption in 1957.

Mountain climbers on Rwanda hiking safaris can explore the scenic Mount Bisoke on a day excursion. The climb is steep but walkable with two major hiking trails to each of the lakes. The trail to the summit is the popular one and it takes a 6 hours hike, 4 hours ascending to the summit and 2 hours descending. However, the hike entirely depends on the speed of the walk and the frequency of the stops.

On the Mount Bisoke hike, you go across a series of different vegetation habitats starting with the bamboo forest, move to Hagenia Hypericum forest and finally moving through Senecio Lobelia bush near the summit.

Important Information for the Mount Bisoke Hike

The current park fees for the mount Bisoke hike are US$ 75 per person. Can be paid on the day of the trek and includes a guide.

Mount Bisoke hikes starts at 07:00am each morning from the park’s headquarters in Kinigi from where visitors will drive or be driven to the start point of the trek.

In case you need to hire porters, you can do this from the park headquarters from USD 20.

You require a climbing stick which you can purchase from the nearby shops.

Carry/wear appropriate hiking shoes mainly water proof and light. Should be comfortable for your entire hike.

Pack enough snacks to keep you energized during the hike

Carry enough liters of drinking water to take you through the hike

Wear appropriate hiking clothes which should be long sleeved shirts, thick trousers, hand gloves and carry a rain jacket.

Have your insect repellent

She was buried near her favorite gorilla and her works sparked off great gorilla conservation efforts. Today people add in a visit to the Dian Fossey grave as a sign of paying tribute to her. The Dian Fossey hike takes about 4 hours and by luck you can come across a gorilla but mostly you will learn so much about the history of mountain gorilla conservation at low costs.
